Owner's Statement

Welcome to Promises Kept!

Promises Kept is a 1987, Island Packet, she spent 25 years sailing in the Great Lakes, being used on weekends for 3-4 months of the year, the remaining time of the year she was covered and stored in a boat yard. I purchased her from Rich and Kay Meyers in July of 2011, they owned her for 12 years. I had her shipped to Marco Island by Sailors moving Sailors. All of Promises previous owners took great care of her.  I have owned her for the last 5 ½ years, she has been a joy.

I am selling Promises because my life has changed.  We built another home in Central Florida to be closer to our grandchildren, and take care of an elderly parent. We are still keeping our residences on Marco Island but will be spending less time there. In the 5 ½ years I have owned her I lived only one mile away giving me easy access to the boat, being retired I had the time to keep her in tip-top condition, she was my passion and hobby.

 Maintenance and General Condition:

I approach boat maintenance in Florida from two perspectives: scheduled and preventative. Unfortunately, few boat owners do and both are just as important.  I have a Service Log that has been actively used since 1999. I have recorded every thing that I have done in the last 5 ½ years in detail.

Promises condition is exceptional given that she is 30 years old. She has been a fresh water boat for 25 years and lived in Lake Michigan where she was lightly used and did not have the harsh tropical sun beating on her.  The condition of her engine, bright work, teak, rigging, gel coat, and sails reflect this.

I have taken extraordinary steps to minimize the effects of the harsh Florida environment.  The diesel engine is flushed with fresh water after every use, reducing the corrosive effects of salt water on the internal parts of the Yanmar Diesel engine.  Promises diesel engine is well maintained and sips only one gallon of fuel in 3hrs at 1800 RPM, does not smoke, is incredibly reliable and starts every time. She has a total of 2300 hours; she has never failed me on the water, looks new and is clean. After every trip day or over night I take the time to open the engine compartment and check the vitals, few do this. The fuel tank is topped off after every use, reducing the chances of fuel tank condensation, an Algae –X system was installed to further reduce the chances of algae growing in this tropical environment.

 Sunbrella, Sails, Full Enclosure

The Sunbrella has been treated yearly with UV protection and covered with a custom white reflective cover to further minimize the effects of the harsh Florida sun. Sails are always covered when not in use further reducing the damaging effects of the sun.  Her sails, and sail covers have been maintained by me with my Sail Rite zigzag sewing machine yearly. Promises has a complete enclosure with built in screens and are in great shape. They are wonderful in a rainstorm, or sailing in the winter in Florida. The enclosure comes in 10 pieces and can be installed in many combinations to fit your cruising needs or folded up and stored below.

The teak has been stripped, sanded, sealed with a 2 part marine epoxy protecting it from salt water absorption and giving it a sense of depth, then lightly sanded and coated with 7 coats with a Marine varnish with UV light protection,  a light maintenance coat is applied every 5-6 months .

When Promises is not being used a 5000BTU air conditioner in installed in the companionway, in the winter I use a dehumidifier , this keeps the inside mold free and smelling fresh.  All winches have been taken apart in the last year and greased.

This Fall I had her pulled for scheduled maintenance in Port Charlotte, and did the following : replaced cutlass bearing, removed and replace holding tank thru hull valve, eliminated old thru-hulls that were no longer being used, cleaned, restored, and painted bottom with hard ablative, scrubbed , cleaned the bilge, painted it white, restored deck gel coat, restored deck teak, polished bright work, repaired sails, re-adjusted valves on diesel engine, replaced the entire water pump, interior teak was cleaned and then hand rubbed with lemon oil, entire hard interior was wiped down with a cleaning solution, there is no mold.  Promises has a Packless Sealing System PSS on the shaft that was rebuilt this fall, I also added a locking donut to secure the system in place.

 Improvements I have made:

The freezer icebox has been greatly improved, I added  2 inches of rigid insulation in the refrigerator and freezer, and then covered it with a PVC waterproof board.  This added insulation dropped my energy demands of the ref/ freezer by 40 %.

I removed all the old energy grabbing light bulbs on the interior and replaced them with energy efficient LED bulbs, reducing energy usage in this area by 80%.

With the power demands reduced, I installed two 100-watt polycrystalline solar panels in 2016 and a 10 AMP PWM controller. By reducing my energy usage in Ref/Freezer and lighting and adding a solar system, Promises comfort and range have been greatly improved.  Promises has a 300Amp hour house  battery bank, and a starting battery, which have been properly maintained. The PWM controller’s computers chip keeps the batteries charged in the most efficient manner and has a decaling cycle, every 28 days,  that keeps the batteries operating at their highest effiency. The solar panels produce up to 9 Amps in full sunlight, and keep the battery bank topped off at 14 volts in the winter and 13.7 in the summer. The smart PWM controller does not over charge the batteries.  The panels even produce electric on cloudy days. The panels are kept clean on a regular basis to obtain this high efficiency. The solar panels are 17 % efficient.

I added a Garmin 740 chart plotter in 2012 rebuilt the front sail roller furling, in 2014, installed a new toilet in 2014, new bilge pump and switch 2014, new auto pilot wheel in 2016, new running lines in 2015, I installed a new fuel filter assembly in 2015, I replaced all port hole gaskets that were leaking and have more gaskets on board, I sewed Sunbrella hatch covers for all hatches, and fabricated custom hand rail covers, and pedestal cover. Most of the portholes screens have been replaced, there is more screening on board. Interior blue cushions were replaced by previous owner in 2006. I replaced all Isinglass on the dodger in 2015.

Rigging and sails were replaced in 2006.

Promises has a leather satchel with literature and information on all the different systems that have been purchased by all previous owners on board.

Promises is in the best condition since I have owned her.  If your looking for a roomy mid size cruising boat with a great pedigree, beautiful lines, maintained by a knowledgeable owner, in exceptional condition, she should be at the top of your list.
